I’m Richard Petter, a Senior Security Consultant with more than 20 years’ experience designing, deploying and troubleshooting enterprise security infrastructure.

Throughout my career I’ve worked with organisations ranging from commercial enterprises to public sector bodies, helping them design secure, resilient and operationally practical networks. My areas of interest include network security, Zero Trust, Cisco security technologies, automation, cloud security and enterprise architecture.

Technology doesn’t exist in isolation, though. Increasingly, the decisions we make as architects and engineers are influenced by geopolitics, energy policy, supply chains and regulation. Those wider forces have become just as important as the technology itself.

This blog is where I explore that intersection.

Some articles are deeply technical, covering subjects such as Cisco Firepower, APIs, Python automation and infrastructure engineering. Others step back to examine broader themes including data sovereignty, resilience, critical infrastructure and the future of enterprise technology.

Everything I write is based on real-world experience, lessons learned from customer engagements, or observations from the industry. My aim isn’t simply to explain how a technology works, but to explore why it matters and how it fits into the bigger picture.

When I’m not working, you’ll usually find me cycling through the Chilterns, swimming, reading, or experimenting in my home lab.
